Plenary presentation at ANZAED 2026
This presentation examined eating disorders through a human‑rights lens, highlighting how treatment models and clinical assumptions are shaped by culture, history, and systems that determine whose bodies are protected, pathologised, or overlooked. The talk outlined key human‑rights principles—autonomy, dignity, non‑discrimination—and explored where they intersect and conflict with standard ED practices, particularly in high‑risk or ego‑syntonic presentations. Clinicians were invited to adopt a critical, rights‑aligned lens and to consider the structural shifts required for safe, equitable care in the eating‑disorders space. Clinicians are called to critically examine the basis for many standard forms of eating disorders care.
